Entrepreneurs in Côte d’Ivoire are circumventing high retail rents and government bureaucracy to start businesses online, resulting in a thriving informal digital economy.
From baby clothes to handmade jewelry, small business owners are finding that selling via the internet has become the viable option for those who cannot compete with big players in the country. That includes a community of Lebanese entrepreneurs who have escaped an economic crisis at home to build a sizable presence in the country’s physical retail sector.
Social media-run businesses are proving so popular that they are fueling a second economy of “motorcycle boys,” who pick up parcels and ride across town to deliver at the doorsteps of clients.
The Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MoCI) has announced the closure of two retail outlets in Umm Lekhba and Laboir City for violating its circulars regarding precautionary and preventative measures put in place to prevent the spread of the coronavirus (Covid-19), and for failing to meet general and special requirements.
WINNIPEG Emergency crews continue to battle a blaze that broke out at a truck dealership in Brandon. Brandon Police told CTV News a fire was reported at the Kenworth truck dealership on Highland Avenue shortly after 1:40 p.m. on Monday. On Monday evening, police said the fire was still active and emergency crews were still on scene. Staff Sgt. Kevin Loewen of the Brandon Police Service said he has heard comments from people who said they heard what sounded like explosions in the area. It could be any number of things, said Loewen. It’s a garage, so there will be all sorts of things inside that, given enough heat that could ignite and or explode.
